Time has proved that KCHR is an all Marxist cart of quasi-governmental organization intended to rewrite and forge the history of this land. Now they are busy with bringing to light for a past of Kerala without an Indian flavor. Currently an opportunity was assigned at Pattanam, near the archaic port-town Muzris [Kodungalloor] to KCHR by the ruling Marxist Party Government. The archaeological excavations sponsored by the Government of Kerala at Pattanam, near Kodungalloor, [It was a port city from the time of the epics to the devastating flood of River Periyar in 1314 CE], is in the midst of controversies such as academic depreciation, fabrication of data to fit the political ideology of the Left historians and above all providing cultural stimulus to religious proselytism of the Christian Church in Kerala.
The Pattanam excavations are supervised by the modern historians with blind commitment to the Marxist Party. The director of the ongoing excavation work, Dr. P. J. Cheriyan has worked on “Vayalar – Punnappra Communist sponsored violence in the erstwhile Princely State of Travancore [now in south-Kerala]” as topic for his PhD dissertation. Above all he is a known co-passenger of the bandwagon of CPM. The Chairman of KCHR, Prof. K.N. Panicker [the hero of Arun Shourie’s work ‘Eminent Historians’], which backs the Pattanam excavations is specialized in ‘peasant protests and revolts of the 20th century in Malabar’. Some others in the consultant panel such as K. N. Ganesh, P.K. Michel Tharaken, and M. R. Raghava Varier are not only just left historians but have articulated their skill in interpreting and fabricating the notorious communal riot, the Moplah Riots of 1921, as freedom struggle as well as this spine chilling Hindu carnage as peasant uprising against their land lords [janmis]. Not only have the eminent archaeologists of integrity but even knowledgeable scholars of Kerala such as Prof. M. G. S. Narayanan, Prof. K. V. Raman, etc has been discarded from the official consultant list for the ‘Pattanam Heritage Project’. [The ongoing archaeological excavation is named by the authorities as such].
So far millions of rupees have been spent by the Government of Kerala for the publicity for the Pattanam excavations in print and visual media. The director of the project P. J. Cheriyan who has no paper or book on archeology to his credit hitherto has announced that Pattanam excavations provide evidence of a pre-Brahminical South India. Is it intended to attest that Aryan Invasion theory applies to Kerala and all Brahmins of Kerala are Aryans and others are Dravidians?
The minister for cultural affairs M. A. Baby has made an official declaration of holding “Benale” festival – an Italian festival – from Kodungalloor to Kochi [Cochin] reminiscent of cultural Rome. After Valentine’s Day, Benale is ready to counter traditional Hindu celebrations with globalised aroma. It is, no doubt, intended to cultivate an alien culture in around the capital city of an ancient Hindu kingdom, the Cheras. Millions of rupees have been announced for this festival and setting up of 25 museums and for heritage site status from UNESCO.
It is an orchestrated strategy to identify Pattanam as ancient Muzris and subsequently to corroborate it with the mythical arrival of Thomas, the disciple of Jesus, in 52 of C.E as well as his conversion of native Hindus to Christianity. The ongoing excavation at Pattanam has taken the chronology of the site to circa 100 CE to juxtapose with the religious conversion theory of Thomas. With this objective archaeology and history is concealed, fabricated and misapprehended. The Left Front also intends to hijack the traditional Christian vote-bank which has remained intact with the congress and UDF till now. Such is the strategy to turn conversion myth of St. Thomas into history and grant legitimacy to ongoing conversion of Hindus and interpret it as mute cultural synthesis. Such is the eagerness to fabricate facts and substantiate that Christianity was established in Kerala a millennium before the formation of Hindu society and hence the socio-cultural growth of Hindus is based on foundation contributed by the Christian Church here.
Conclusions have already been drawn before the Pattanam excavation was launched. It is intended to prove that Kerala as a geo-cultural zone had little interaction with the rest of India. The socio-cultural growth of Kerala has been developed by its interaction with the Mediterranean. If evidences of Kerala’s interaction with Greater India exists, it is just marginal and which developed by the last few centuries. This is the constructed conclusion of Pattanam excavation. Contention over the Recent Archaeological Excavations of Kerala

1. The ongoing [second] archeological excavation work atPattanam near Kodungalloor has created serious doubts among the academic circle of Kerala.
2. The proposed work as originally conceived comprised ofCheraman ParambuKottappuram and Pattanam of Kodungalloor in central Kerala and KanthallorVizinjamand Kollam in south Kerala. But KCHR, [Kerala Council for Historical Research] the nodal agency which is conducting present excavation work at Pattanam, omitted all the sites except Pattanam.
3. The excavation at Pattanam near Kodungalloor is now in progress. It is still very much in the initial stage and sufficient materials have not been discovered so as to derive any solid conclusions. But the paradox is that some European Indologists and N.R.I Malayalee scholars are purposefully propagating certain conclusions as undisputable and final intended to misdirect academic community.
4. KCHR purposefully avoids academic/public debates involving experts in archeology over the discovered artifacts. Instead of it they share the progress of the excavation with the above said groups and give wide media publicity for unconfirmed concepts and conclusions.
5. KCHR accepts the fact that the only written reference about Pattanam is of Portuguese Bishop Francisco Ros [1603-04] and is used to fix the site. [The earliest available written evidence with a reference to Pattanam is a Portuguese document of 1603-04, by Bishop Francisco Ros, SJ – translated by Jacob Kollaparambil, Historical Sources of Kananites, Kottayam 1986. * [It is quoted from p 6 of ‘The Living Dead and the Lost Knowledge’, published by Dept. of Culture, Department of Archeology, Government of Kerala].
6. Government of Kerala is the main financial supporter of this project. But the government is reluctant to extend its support to the excavations of Cheraman Parambu and Kottappuram sites which are historically and culturally much more fertile and productive.
7. Until the great flood of River Periyar in 1341 CE Kodungalloor, the temple city, was a world renowned port. Present site Pattanam is located 6 km south of River Periyar, and 4 east of Arabian Sea. The only water-way near Pattanam site is a distributory canal of River Periyar which is running one km south of the location.
8. The nodal agency doing excavation, KCHR, is not a competent body to undertake Archaeological Excavations. It is a quasi-governmental body entitled to do research and studies in history.

On reading my article on Buddhism in Kerala on this very blog, Prof P J Cherian the director of Kerala Council for Historical Research invited me to visit the excavation site at Pattanam near North Paravur in Ernakulam district in central Kerala.

It is in connection with the Muziris heritage project to re-invent and conserve the cultural history and archeological legacy of Kodungallur/Muchiri or Muziris that this extensive digging up is done in various locations on the northern side of the Vadakekara bridge towards the west of NH 17.

Kerala’s historic connections with the rest of the world as far as Arabia,China,Rome and the Mediterranean  are unearthed through concerted and dedicated effort of KCHR under the leadership of Prof Cherian.  Researchers and expert students from various parts of the world including Britain are involved in the work in progress that began a couple of years ago.

I visited Pattanam along with Prof Laxman of Madras Institute of Developmental Studies, Dr George K Alex of Kozhanchery St Thomas College and Dr Sundarbabu of Vikas Adhyayan Kendra, Mumbai.  We were together in an international colloquium on Caste, Religion and Culture at Kochi.

We reached Pattanam just a few miles north of Paravur that still spots its Jew street, cemetery and synagogue around 7am on the bright sunny morning of May 3, 2011.  Pattanam means port city in ancient Tamil and even in current Malayalam like Valapattanam in Malabar or Nagapattanam in Tamil Nadu.  Most of the old place names in Kerala that was part of the Chera kingdom of the ancient Tamil country were formed during the ancient Tamilakam era during or soon after the Sangham period (BC 5th to AD 5th centauy) that is known for ancient  Sramana Tamil epics Chilapatikaram andManimekhalai.

Prof Cherian welcomed us and showed the details of excavations and allowed us to see and touch the strands of Kerala’s past that is preserved in the various layers of the soil in the pits.  He explained to us about iron based early human habitations here in the BC era.  According to him Jews reached these shores probably around first century BC and they could be the first converts to Christianity here.  The legend of St Thomas reaching Malankara in AD 52 could not be an impossibility according to him.  The myth of the first Brahman converts is clearly a later bogus fabrication by a threatened minority community under Brahmanical hegemony that persecuted minorities like Jains and Buddhists and annihilated them from the soil of Kerala for ever.

Then with the help of terracotta ware called Indian rouletted-ware  belonging to around fourth or third century BC  he explained that there was a  clear presence of Sramana groups and trading communities from the north from the third century BC onwards.   Brahmi script used to write on the terracotta ware in old Tamil language was introduced in south India by these Sramana or Chamana or Amana sages who reached the south with their trading and mercantile brethren.

The Hindu daily has recently reported the finding of these earthen ware with the inscription in Brahmi Tamil script “Amana” meaning Sramana or Jain/Buddhist in origin.  It clearly establishes the fact that Kerala was civilized by Sramana sages in BC fourth/third century itself.

This concrete historical and archeological evidences prove that the light of letters and ethics were spread among the people of south India by Buddhism and Jainism as early as fourth or third century BC against the Hindu hegemonic claims of Brahmanism civilizing Kerala in the seventh or eighth century AD.

Prof Cherian showed us small beads and Roman amphora and other vessels belonging to the Mediterranean lands.  The Vesuvian volcanic minerals in the potsherds are clearly visible even after 2000 years.  The bitumen coating in some of them are still intact and they belong to West Asia.  These handicrafts of clay from ancient civilizations never lie about their time and place according to Prof Cherian.  Chera coins with the impression of bow and arrow (symbolizing the Villava legacy) were also recovered from the site.  These findings establish the  historical validity of Sangham literature and early literary references in old Tamil regarding the cultural pasts of Chera land and the ancient Tamil country comprising Chola and Pandya kingdoms along with it.  After all we got vivid references of Muchiri from ancient Tamil epics.

This indeed is a break and rupture in Kerala’s cultural history and archeology.  It marks a moment of paradigm shift and radical departure for all who served the dominant and hegemonic Hindu Savarna or Brahmanical versions of the pasts of Kerala repressively established through epistemological violence and erasure and covet silence by some of the high priests, sacred ideologues and Savarna headmen who monopolized and policed speech, letters, politics and history in this small part of the world.

Even the orthodox and official historians who are keeping mum would have to accept the concrete tangible evidences this excavation has rediscovered in an undeniable and profounder way.  Let us appreciate the phenomenal work materialized by KCHR under the leadership of Prof P J Cherian and friends.

This radical moment prompts us to continue our search and excavations in other parts of Kerala especially in Cherthala and Alapuzha regions where the huge wooden ship was unearthed in similar attempts earlier.  The extensive archeological studies in Kuttanad and neighborhoods especially Karthikappally, Mavelikara, Karunagapally, Kayamkulam, Thotapally, Trikunapuzha, Aratupuzha regions would also produce valuable findings regarding the real and vital past of Kerala.

New Pseudo-Intellectual Endeavours to Distort the True History of Kerala.

In the light of the latest work of Rajiv Malhotra, Breaking India, it is genuine to observe the parallel developments in Kerala. The book well explains the ongoing process of the incubation of Aryan Dravidian/Dalit dichotomy in Tamilnadu and the South. The purpose of such an endeavour is intended to destabilizing the nation and extends the frontiers of the dying Christendom over Hindu strongholds.
The situation in Kerala is much different from the rest of the South. The main reason is that in Tamilnadu and other regions the divisive forces projecting Brahmins and Sanskrit as the common enemy of the rest. Here in Kerala Brahmins is microscopic minority and not forms the part of vote-bank politics. Above all economically they are marginalized groups. The transactional language Malayalam has no existence without Sanskrit. Especially due to historical reasons Keralaites lost their chauvinistic spirit in the deluge of 200 years colonial relations. More over the twentieth century Kerala Renaissance leaders like Sree Narayana Guru, Chattambi Swamikal, Mahatma Ayyan Kali, etc were strived to strengthen its age-old Hindu identity. So Aryan Dravidian/Dalit dichotomy is non-operative in Kerala.
So the same divisive force which operates from the North East to Tamilnadu is functioning in Kerala with entirely different tools and stratagems. The intrinsic worth of Kerala is not differed from the Sanathana Dharma. For millenniums Kerala and Hindu are contiguous as one and the same to its people irrespective of its jati differences. The said forces here are to attain the common declared end by using history as a powerful weapon. Their effort is to detach Kerala from the main national cultural realm through disproving its age-old intimacy of the natives beginning from the days of Vedas. For this end, fifteen years back, the Marxist led government established Kerala History Council [KCHR] to rewrite and distort its ancient history. The greatest paradox is that the KCHR was later baptized by Smt. Sonia Gandhi. Even though KCHR was started as a pro-Marxist party quasi-governmental organization for the research and studies in history now it is discharging the function of an archaeological department. Archaeology is a double edged sword in the unscrupulous hands. The recent book of Charles Allen, The Buddha and Dr. Fuherer, tells how archeologist can distort history. In the light of Allen’s revelations I invite the attention of the intellectual community of India in the ongoing archeological excavations of Kerala.
Kerala in the great Sangam period functioned as an export hub to the West. In this time the port Kodungalloor was well known to all maritime kingdoms of the day. Valmiki Ramayana refers to this port as Muchiri. Later Greeks and other western people called it as Muzris.  Muchiri/ Muzris/ Kodungalloor until the European arrival were a dominant Hindu city. Several temples, forts and monuments in and around of Kodungalloor have to say the history of its golden past.
In nineteen forties the Cochin State Archaeological Department under its director late Anujan Achen conducted exploration and trial digging in Kodungalloor, Kottappuram, Cheramanparambu, Moozhikulam, etc villages and identified as the Muzris as Kodungalloor. On the basis of the findings he had recommended further excavations in these sites. After the independence the Cochin state lost its entity. Thus his suggestions became another scapegoat of growing communal equations and Marxian anarchism in the newly born Travancore-Cochin state.  Another living archeologist K.V. Raman later conducted investigations in the proposed sites and well attested the importance of excavations proposed earlier by Anujan Achen.
But KCHR started unilateral excavation work to identify Muzris under the hypothesis that it was “Pattanam” a small inland hamlet seven km south of ancient port city Kodungalloor. Pattanam is the mother’s village of present finance minister Thomas Isaac is the irony of the affair.  One couldn’t deny the real-estate interest behind it. It is because the KCHR Muzris project is seasoned as a tourist project by the finance ministry of Kerala.
KCHR used only one literary source to identify Muzris. That is a seventeenth century Portuguese document written by Bishop Francisco Ross translated into Malayalam by Jacob Kollamparmbil as a footnote/cross-reference to a history book on the history his Christian rite. [See ‘The Living Dead and the Lost knowledge’, Department of Culture, Department of Archeology, Government of Kerala, Trivandrum, 2008, p6]. KCHR or its stewards had never seen the original text which they used to form the hypothesis for their excavation work at Pattanam is the malady of the present endeavour. Sangam literatures such as Akam, Puram, Cilappatikaram, Manimekhela, etc clearly explain of various landmarks, location, direction and distances of Muzris from various cities of Tamil Sangam South. The said literary sources and foreign accounts testifies that Kodungalloor as the ancient Muzris. But the KCHR while formulating the hypothesis for the present excavation not accounted the said indigenous or other foreign literary sources.
The present work of KCHR is not transparent. Certain hide and seek are going on in the rank and file of KCHR. The representatives of KCHR presented the hypothesis of the project as findings in recently concluded international archeological conferences at Ravenna and Vienna. They are trying to establish in Muzris Hindu/Vedic religion reached only after seventh century without ample proof. Before Hinduism Roman religion, Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism and Islam were reached here is another finding of KCHR. Such piecemeal information is periodically appearing exclusively in The Hindu News Paper only.  Another thing is that the relics that recovered from the site is not subjecting to the intellectual debate.  Intellectual world forced to take notice of the discoveries from the said news paper only.
Taking advantage of the so called findings, the Catholic Church opened a new pilgrimage centre near the Pattanam site as the entry gate of Thomas, the disciple of Jesus, to Kerala in 52 CE. Kerala, as far as the Hindu society is concerned, is a sinking ship. Anyhow behind the KCHR endeavour multifaceted interest is brewing. Political designs of Marxist party, Christian and Islamic designs of hijacking Kerala from the Hindu hands, economic interest of Marxist leaders, etc are the motive force behind the Muzris Project of KCHR. KCHR is eager to open a few more sites in important Hindu centres of Kerala with a hidden agenda of reducing Hindu tradition and heritage. The spirit of Hinduism is the unifying force. Once it is reduced or tear up it is easy to subjugate this nation.
In Tamilnadu the same elements reduced Thiru Valluvar as the disciple of Thomas. [Breaking India, p 94]. It is really humiliation of the 1.2 billion population of the nation. Similarly in Kerala the Church popularizing a story that Adi Sankara learned Monism [advaidam] from Christians. The ongoing excavations are sufficiently tendered to justify the desired ends. Such tailor-made excavations will endanger Hindu specious for ever not only from Kerala but also from the entire nation.

    Knowledge about Muziris in historical studies is nothing new. It has already been discussed by the early scholars who were more scholarly than the present ones zeroing in on the muziris studies. Murachipattanam is mentioned in some Mahakavyas including that of Kalidasa who probably lived during the Gupta period which some historians say was in the 8th century AD. But this chronological fixing itself is done in the light of William Johns Sheet Anchor of Indian chronology which has been already set aside in the light of Megasthanese accounts about Palibotra which the Greek author says, situated 200 stadia north-west to the Confluence of Ganges and Jomanese (Ganga and Yamuna) But the Pataliputra or the present Panta is about 200 stadia south-east to the Ganga-Yamuna confluence. This means that the Palibotra (visited by Megasthanese) ruled by Xandrokotos was not the Pataliputra of Chandragupta Maurya. Hence the bridging between the European and Indian chronologies based on the unhistorical meeting between Alexander or Selukos Nikator with Chandragupta Maurya becomes untenable. Now Kalidasa himself mentions the illustrious city of Murachi which means that this city was in its flourishing stage even before the time of Kalidasa who lived the Gupta period which was by the calculations of the scholars starting from Talboys Wheeler upto the recent ones like Kota Venkatachalam or Sriram Sathe during the BC times. Even the the time of Sankaracharya itself was during the BCE if to believe the Indian accounts including the Brihadsankaravijayam of Chitsukacharya. Dr. Chariyan and his excovating group had better study the many views regarding the chronology of ancient India of which ancient Kerala was a part rather than making his own views about the Muziris Chronology as if Muziris is a place totally isolated from the rest of India and that it has a chronology and history that stand apart. Second, it is known to everybody including those of the shores of Kerala that all through out the western cost ie. the places between Chavakkad and ampalappuzha-Trikkunnappuzha people have come across the Roman coins and many such antique objects that recall the existence of a brisk trade between the Western cost of Kerala and Rome. Kodungallore has been famous for such international tade and cultural contact. This town is also far famed in the Sangham literature as one of the Chera centres or the cultural capital of ancient Chera empire. Now why that the KCHR assumes that the Place which was originally called ‘Pashnam’ rather than Pattanam was the ancient port of Muziris? Why it leaves other places off?. It had better excovate all the nearby centres where the Roman wares are found and come to a conclusion. Or just because that Roman wares are found in ‘Pashnam’ (not Pattanam) would it declare it as the ancient Muziris? If so will it call all the places near Kodungallore where the Roman wares are found Muziris? The present excovations appears to be based on some preconcieved misconceptions just like the search in the dark room for the black cat which is not there.
