Kovai CSI bishop held in pastor assault case

Express News Service

COIMBATORE: Dr Manickam Dorai, bishop of Coimbatore CSI diocese, was arrested by the Devarchola police on Saturday for failing to appear before court in a case relating to the assault of a pastor last year.

The arrest warrant was issued by the Gudalur Judicial Magistrate Court.

A police team, led by sub-inspector Basuvaraj, took him to Gudalur to be produced before the magistrate.

Bishop Dorai is accused of assaulting and threatening a pastor of a CSI church in Naduvattam in Gudalur taluk, Kaviraj George, for taking part in a protest against him.

The CSI People’s Welfare Centre had organised a token fast at Gandhipuram on June 16, 2009, protesting against large-scale irregularities, misappropriation and misuse of power by Bishop Dorai. Several representatives from Erode, Tirupur, Mettupalayam, Udhagamandalam and Coimbatore took part in it. Pastor George also participated in the fast, which angered the bishop.

The next day, the bishop is understood to have asked the pastor to meet him at a school run by the diocese at Devarchola, where he reportedly assaulted him and threatened him of dire consequences if he complained.

Pastor George registered a complaint with the Devarchola police and an FIR was filed on June 25, 2009. The police, after conducting preliminary inquiries, filed a chargesheet accusing the bishop of assault at the Gudalur Judicial Magistrate Court on October 26, 2009. But, Bishop Dorai failed to appear before court, following which the judicial magistrate issued an arrest warrant on May 3 this year.

Besides, diocese member R Prem Kumar of Singanallur has also charged Bishop Dorai and 31 others with misappropriating diocese funds worth Rs 3 crore. The CB-CID is investigating the case. While Bishop Dorai and his brothers obtained an anticipatory bail, two others were arrested and later released on bail.

Kumar, in his complaint, alleged that in 2007, the bishop had swindled 2.80 crore from the diocese funds that were meant for the construction of an electrical and electronics engineering block at the CSI College of Engineering at Ketti in the Nilgiris. Kumar had provided documents as proof of the scam.

After a series of complaints against him, Bishop Dorai was asked to go on a two-month leave by Synod moderator Vasanth Kumar. Paul Vasanth Kumar, bishop of Trichy-Thanjavur was deputed to take additional charge of the Coimbatore diocese.

On May 7, the diocese executive committee meeting at Ketti in the Nilgiris was cancelled, as members were up in arms against the bishop as another instance of fund swindling came to the fore.

Prem Kumar has urged revamping the entire diocese administration and asked that the executive committee be dissolved immediately. He wants the Synod to take the Coimbatore diocese under its direct control until things are sorted out.

  1. Ex-Bishop’s book sheds lights on church groupism

Express News Service First Published : 17 Mar 2010 05:16:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 17 Mar 2010 08:30:18 AM IST
THRISSUR: The autobiography of the Bishop (emeritus) of Sagar Diocese, Joseph Pastor Neelankavil CMI – ‘Daivame Angu Enne Uyarthy’ (Lord, Thou Lifted Me) – says “the fissiparous tendencies and factional feud in the CMI congregation and some of the tributary organisations of the Church were worse than those in any political party in the country.”
The autobiography is to be released on the 81st birthday of the bishop which falls on March 19. Neelankavil, hailing from Thrissur, was the second bishop of Sagar (February 22, 1987, to March 25, 2006). According to the book, the bishop was put in a “tangled situation” by “unhealthy and undesirable elements” in the the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) and certain tributary organisations of the Church.
The main players in the game of mud-slinging against the author were the CMI priests of the Rural Development Service Society (RDSS) of St Paul’s CMI Province of Sagar – Bhopal, nuns of Franciscan Clarist Congregation and members of the Order of Saint Francis (Franciscan Sisters of the School).
The basic cause for the harassment was that certain superiors of CMI did not like his elevation as bishop and had been active in ‘cornering’ him by organising dharnas and fasts at the Pastoral Centre ever since his elevation.
“Attempts at character assassination” through anonymous letters were aplenty. On July 10, 1996, a dozen CMI priests staged a five-day dharna-cum-fast at the Pastoral Centre in protest against the closure of four centres under RDSS. They had been closed following certain ‘shameful happenings’. It was called off following CMI provincial Fr Werner’s intervention.
Another dharna was staged by non-CMI priests on February 23, 2006, in protest against the ‘improper’ constitution of the committee for the consecration celebration of his successor bishop. “A most unfortunate incident” was a section of CMI priests and nuns mentally torturing and finally showing the door to the Superior of the Order of Saint Francis, Sr Tresa John, for supporting the author.
The book said RDSS was meant to do social service aimed at the uplift of the poor and the downtrodden as per the teachings of the Christ. It has no ecclesiastical rights and its activities come under the control of the Bishop; the ‘indirect’ fights were aimed at encroaching on the rights and authority of the Bishop.
Besides disrupting the spiritual enrichment of the Sagar diocese stretched over 6,000 villages, the cold war tarnished the image of the Church. Several developmental programmes proposed for the diocese were either hindered or abandoned. Neelankavil, now settled at Kuttur, near here, said duality of heads in a diocese was the problem and it should be avoided to prevent such happenings in future. “A change in mindset based on introspection of all concerned is essential,” he added.

  2. CSI asks Bishop to quit

Express News Service First Published : 11 Oct 2009 02:45:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 11 Oct 2009 07:47:14 AM IST
CHENNAI: Members and pastors belonging to the Church of South India (CSI) have urged the Bishop of the Madras Diocese, Rt Rev V Devasahayam to quit graciously without taking a recourse to “legal wrangles”.
Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, John Victor, pastor of the St Thomas Church, Santhome and other church leaders said the tenure of V Devasahayam, the Bishop of the Madras Diocese of the CSI had come to an end on April 30. Devashayam had promised that he would resign in 10 years when he took over as a bishop in 1999. The supreme authority of the church, the Synod had also asked him to step down. “Instead of quitting, he has taken the matter to court and there too he has not got favourable orders. At least now, he should not aggravate the issue further and quit immediately.”
In case this did not happen, he would have to face agitations and the fury of the church members, they said. H Immanuel, Paul Paneerselvam and other members of the CSI said the had bishop faced many allegations of “misappropriation” of church funds, besides “immoral” behaviour and “discrimination” against Dalits. “We have strong suspicion that if allowed to continue, he may siphon off the church funds, they charged. “The offering of the believers amounting to over Rs 40 lakh has been used by Devasahayam to fight his case in many courts and he had no right to do it,” they alleged. Immanuel said the bishop had fabricated letters to fight his case. “This is highly unbecoming of a person who is officiating as the Bishop and we don’t want such a man to continue in his office even for a minute,” he added.

  3. Life threat to former CSI bishop

Express News Service First Published : 13 Jan 2010 03:27:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 13 Jan 2010 07:10:44 AM IST
COIMBATORE: City police on Tuesday registered a case against former secretary of Coimbatore CSI diocese D S Amirtham on charges of manhandling and threatening former bishop and ex-moderator William Moses of dire consequences.
According to sources, Amirtham entered into the special enclosure at CSI Christ Church, where William Moses was present, used filthy words against the former bishop and threatened to kill him.
Based on Moses’ complaint, the Race Course police registered a case against Amirtham for allegedly using abusive language and attempting to murder the former bishop.
The attack comes in the wake of a case filed against CSI Bishop Manickam Dorai and Amirtham by CBCID police on the charge of misappropriation of diocese funds. The case was taken up following complaints by many people including William Moses.
Bishop Dorai, who had sought an anticipatory bail, which was rejected by Sessions Judge on the grounds that he might tamper with the records at diocese office. Following which, he filed an appeal in the Madras High Court which came up for hearing on Tuesday. However, it was adjourned to January 18.
Meanwhile, Chennai Moderator Most Rt Rev Gladson and Synod treasurer Devasahayam on Tuesday deposed before the CB-CID police.
Gladson told a reporter that action would be taken against Dorai if charges are proved and that they would discuss the issue at their meeting scheduled at Courtallam on Thursday.

    • Rev. Prince Calvin says:

I disagree with the above statement. There is no charge sheet filled for bishop and DS Amirtham. DS Amirtham is innocent has raised this issus in the council meeting. He mentioned that this has happened before 2007. The council accepted his wordings and he won the election with majority of vote differnce as a higher education convenier.

The information given by the other fellows are incorrect. MR. DS Amirtham can prove that he is not involved in this case. If any one has strong evidence about this come. Speak directly..

  4. Diocese funds misuse: Crucial meet next week

    M Rafi Ahmed First Published : 05 Feb 2010 03:06:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 05 Feb 2010 06:47:34 AM IST
COIMBATORE: Even as the CSI Diocese members here are anxiously waiting for the outcome of the crucial Bishops’ council meet scheduled to be held on Monday at the Chennai Royapettah Synod office, some more skeletons have tumbled out of the cupboard of Bishop M Dorai.
The members have already agitated over the alleged large-scale misappropriation of diocese funds by the bishop and his younger brother M Moorthy. Prem Kumar, a diocese member had sent a petition to the state DGP seeking action against Bishop Dorai and that was forwarded to the Coimbatore CB-CID for inquiry. As the sleuths began the probe, the bishop moved the district court seeking bail, but was rejected, then a petition was filed in the Madras High Court and is slated to come up for final hearing on Monday.
Meanwhile, CSI Welfare Association secretary M Prakash told Express that since the Synod office did not take any steps he has now provided documentary evidences including the letter written by Moorthy seeking Rs 5 lakh for setting up an endowment at CSI Teacher Training Institute and later Rs 6.50 lakh for renovation of its building and compound wall.

  5. CSI flays statements on Nadar reservation
HIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The statements made by certain organisations and Church leaders regarding the reservation to Nadar Community are against facts and are misleading, CSI Moderator and South Kerala Diocese Bishop Rev J W Gladstone has said.
He was addressing a news conference here on Friday to announce the Golden Jubilee celebrations of CSI South Kerala Diocese.
“ The recent Government Order extending reservations to Nadar Hindu and Nadar SIUC communities came on the basis of a report submitted by the State Minority Commission. This was on the basis of a judgment of the Supreme Court in a case in which these two communities were the only parties. So, no other communities will come under this order. Suppressing these facts, certain organisations and Church leaders are trying to showcase it as a new thing passed by the State Government for these two communities,’’ Gladstone said.
As per the State Minority Commission Act 2003, in order to re-arrange the reservation eligibility of the existing communities the State Government should conduct a socio-economic survey. “But, instead of going through such established ways to achieve their needs, certain sections are making wrong statements which intend to sabotage the reservation enjoyed by those who are eligible. The SIUC leadership will resist such attempts at all costs,’’ Gladstone said.
    GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan will inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of the diocese at a function to be held on the LMS Compound on December 21. Opposition leader Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the star festival on the occasion.
As part of the year-long celebrations, the CSI diocese plans to launch various initiatives, including marriage insurance for girls belonging to poor families and steps to strengthen palliative care programmes. The diocese will adopt villages to implement various development programmes, including job training. Rev Gladstone said that various counselling initiatives taken up by the diocese over the last several years have produced remarkable results.
